The Texan photographer Bryan Schutmaat was selected from among some of the most promising talent by the Young Photographers United (YPU). Through a heightened sense of observation Schutmaat deftly conveys a profound portrait of the American highway. In these landscapes, as in his interior shots, Schutmaat rejects all artificial forms of seduction in favour of presenting the echoing void and abandonment. Travelling between snowy plains to deserts, these images juxtaposed cause motel rooms take on an uncanny eerie aspect reminiscent of Wim Wenders and David Lynch films. Schutmaat invites the viewer on to a road trip of his own.
