After years of bringing to life our "false representations of happiness", Arnaud Baumann—having been reporter, commercial photographer and portraitist-- has decided to devote himself entirely to his personal statement as an artist. Since making the decision, he has followed his path without concession and patiently constructed a body of work from scratch, a world of re-acquired sensibilities. Fascinated by the elaboration of new and complex forms of narration (in 1992, he invented the technique of Videocapturing for the Cannes festival), Baumann switches easily from view camera to digital equipment to offer us his vision of contemporary tribes, of heaven or hell. He often isolates his subjects in a neutral studio, away from any kind of set or props, in order to isolate an identity shaken by the uniformity of codes and esthetics. By borrowing as much from dreams as from nature, Arnaud Baumann turns us into the witnesses of constant inner research, nourished by a gaze forever aimed at the other.
