“Strangely cold, technology impresses new habits on our lifestyle and society. In the street, people talk on the phone to a close one far away, but those that pass close by are kept at a distance.”
It is this polemic of distance that interests Jérémie Julien, distance between people and the distance in transmitting information. The ambiguity of these questions can be construed in the hazy overtones of Jérémie Julien’s work. As an artist fascinated by all forms of media; Jérémie Julien has been using mobile phones since they first appeared on the market. They “remind me of my own short-sightedness, and the uncertainty of my own path in life”. The flattening of perspectives creates a visual depth to the body, while random pixelisation precipitates a digital relief. In this way Julien strips away the characteristics akin to humanity; there is a breaking down of form. The human body decoded. “The use of mobile phones was connected with this idea of distance that we encounter on a daily basis; it’s very amateurish, very simplistic. Within this high-tech universe in which we find ourselves, I’m carrying out poetic research on the confines of the body.”
