Né en 1864 à New York et issu du mouvement photographique pictorialiste, Alfred Stieglitz a voyagé et photographié en Europe dans les années 1890. Son œil, pétri de naturalisme, s’attachait avant tout à saisir la réalité tout en restant très attaché à son regard d’auteur. De retour à New York, il a contribué a faire reconnaître la photographie comme une forme d’art moderne, tout en faisant découvrir en Europe et en Amérique de nouveaux talents tels qu’Auguste Rodin, John Martin, Toulouse Lautrec ou Georgia O’Keefe, et plus tard Picasso ou Braque. Grâce à ses activités de galeriste et d’éditeur de magazines tels que Camera Notes ou Camera Work, son influence sur l’art et la photographie américaine a été décisive. Il est mort à New York en 1946.
