Born in Santa Barbara, Markham Johnson grew up in the midst of cars in his father’s gas station. Inspired by his childhood his maintained interest in the bodyworks of a car, explain their frequent appearances in his images. His first photograph of florescent highlighters under a table light, began a career in which objects from the everyday take centre stage, immortalised in misplaced contexts. For over twenty years, this child of the eighties, inspired by Jeff Wall, Wim Wanders in addition to John Fante and Elvis Costello, has compiled a diverse collection of work which combines scenes contrived, complimented by scenes of uncontrived inspiration derived from his urban wanderings.
