The Australian born photographer has over the years visited and revisited the themes of identity and of childhood images and recollections, which for her are integral and ever-present in the world she encounters. In transcending reality she discovers hidden depths of emotion. Subsequent to her exploration of the world of Elvis Presley fans, body builders and all that it entails, she began to photograph imagined scenes anchored in subjectivity and converted into reality. At the core of these fairy-tale and mythically inspired settings are children. From events in Australian history to scenes recreated from Lewis Carroll stories, she derives inspiration from all around to place in her theatre of aesthetics. Polixeni Papapetrou has exhibited both in Australia and internationally in over twenty individual exhibitions and over fifty collective exhibitions. Her work is part of a number of private collections in Australia and in the United States and she has also been successful in obtaining a number of grants.
