Up close and personal, the very English Victoria Hall examines the female form depicted in classical paintings with an ease bordering on provocation. Adorned in prerequisite constructs she plays on the differences between modern media (photography) and iconic secular values. Religious sentiment, quiet stillness and oppressive finery: elements that for Raphael represent femininity and clemency become almost unrecognisable in the era of the photographic darkroom. Our ambiguous relationship towards these images emanating from another time becomes exposed.
