The photo of Ernesto Che Guevara was pure chance. I owe it to the American journalist Laura Bergquist, who worked for "Look". She insisted so much on an interview from Che that he finally accepted. She urgently needed a photographer on New Year's Eve. I was preparing to celebrate when the telephone rang. As the citizen of a neutral country I was able to travel to Cuba. The photo of Che is no longer mine: it has gained its place in the collective memory. That the larger public has adopted it as its own is the best of compliments.
