Far from familiar landmarks, the photographer allows her gaze to be influenced by contemplation as she searches for the ideal distance and point of view. "Away from home the landscape expands, the horizon stretches and this encourages one to put more elements in the composition". Camille Malissen's China is never a tourist's view: she reflects an everyday reality that hasn't been gussied up for the camera. The monuments are swathed in fog and the figures walk with their backs to the viewer. Despite the distance, an intimate and already familiar place.
