Today, in the face of competition from more modern construction sites, the output of the naval site in Gdansk, has dwindled slowly but surely. The warehouses are soon to be replaced by residential housing, new office space, hotels and shopping malls. In the past it was recognized as a symbol of the industrial strength and power wielded by the Soviet Union, but following the fall of communism in the 80s, these construction sites can do nothing but accept their fate. Grégoire Eloy documents the end of an era, in which steel remains the only glimmer of hope drowned in the greyness of uncertainty. These images depict the absence of man in once thriving factories, which now have become the eerie stage for the leftover forms and symbols of a former regime, destined to eventually disappear into the past.
