Portrait of the Countess de Castiglione, née Virginia Elisabetta Luisa Carlotta Antonietta Teresa Maria Oldoïni (1837-1899), Italian courtesan photographed by Pierre-Louis Pierson.
Considered to have been one of the most beautiful women of her time, the Countess de Castiglione achieved notoriety as a mistress of Emperor Napoleon III of France and as these prints will testify spent much time in recording images her own beauty. She leaves behind a collection of more than 400 photographs of herself, candidly representing different periods of her life. A copy of this photograph can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
