The Pyramids of Dashur in Egypt taken by Francis Frith.
In the second half of the 19th century the Western obsession with the East was at its peak. To satisfy the curiosity of a wide and growing audience, photographic pioneers travelled to the archaeological remains which were to become the source of an eastern romanticism that inspired a whole generation of travel writers dreams including Gérard de Nerval, Pierre Loti, Gustave Flaubert to name but a few. Among the first photographers to capture images of this distanced land was the Englishman Francis Frith who completed three journeys to the East between 1856 and 1859 during which he catalogued a series of photographs originally published in London under the title of Egypt and Palestine, Photographed and Described by Francis Frith. From the first edition, there remain only a few rare examples from which this photograph is taken. A version of this photograph can be found in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris.
