Barricade on the place de la Concorde at the beginning of rue Royale. Photographed during the events of the Paris Commune, by Hippolyte Auguste Collard.
The 1871 Paris Commune is without doubt the first great historical event in French history to be subject to such extensive photographic recording. The many photographs that bear witness to the events before us give life to this populist uprising which in total lasted seventy-two days. Among the images depicting this event Hippolyte Collard concentrated on capturing, in picture, the barricades which obstructed the great boulevards of Paris. A version of this photograph can be found in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.
