Stormy scene on the English coast. Amateur photographer.
Taken by an amateur photographer in the middle of a storm, this snapshot effectively illustrates the new possibilities offered by the medium of photography from 1890 onwards. This date marked a turning point when cameras became simpler to use and improvements to the sensitivity of photographic plates, allowed for photographs to be taken spontaneously and opened the way to a whole new generation of photographers classified as “amateur” Photography was no longer an occupation reserved for professionals only. The formal and technical constraints of photography thus removed, gave amateur photographers an opportunity to bring a whole new perspective to the everyday.
