This snapshot taken by an amateur photographer around 1875, clearly illustrates the limits of photographic technique during this period. While the photographic plaque enabled photographers to capture moving images, it was not quite advanced enough to record all the details as can be seen by the slightly blurred image of the cusp of the waves.
