Tobogganing during winter holidays in France. Amateur photographer.
This snapshot taken by an amateur photographer during skiing holidays in France clearly illustrates the new possibilities afforded by the medium of photography from 1890 onwards. This date marked a turning point when cameras became simpler to use and improvements to the sensitivity of photographic plates, allowed for photographs to be taken spontaneously and opened the way to a whole new generation of photographers classified as “amateur” Photography was no longer an occupation reserved for professionals only. The formal and technical constraints of photography thus removed, gave amateur photographers an opportunity to bring a whole new perspective to the everyday.
